To the Common Core...and BEYOND!
This course will take students beyond the Common Core. The Common Core State Standards is an initiative to set shared, consistent, and clear expectations for what students are expected to learn nationally. "To the Common Core and Beyond" will help your child to: demonstrate independence, build stronger content knowledge in literacy skills, comprehend and critique different literary genres, and become stronger writers. Students will read a diverse array of classic and contemporary literature and work hard to respond critically to three main text types: Argumentative/Opinion, Informational, and Narrative. Students will participate in: small-group sessions that reinforce writing skills and reading strategies aligned with the Common Core. The goal of this course is to take students beyond the Common Core. Instruction will guide students to better understand the Common Core Curriculum. If your child enrolls early enough, an effort is made to confer with his/her previous teacher, in order to develop individual goals. (Applies only to Darien Public School students, although the class is open to any student entering grades 3-6)
