Creative Writing and Cartography
For students entering grades 1-3
Children will study maps, create their own maps, and use their maps as inspiration for writing short but epic adventures.
Week One - the study of maps and mapmaking - focusing on treasure maps (with treasure hunt), local maps, national maps, and maybe even global maps.
Week Two - making our own maps and beginning our stories - discussing key concepts of stories such as settings, main characters, and plot (beginning, middle, and end) all of which are reinforced through reading.
Week Three - writing the story - we will read books, children can begin brainstorming their stories, we will create the main character(s), and children will begin writing their stories.
Week Four - finishing the story - children will put finished stories together into their own mini books and have opportunities to illustrate their stories, read them aloud, and even act them out with props.
